Common questions about Green Funerals

This can be achieved in many different ways, from small to big changes to let’s go through some commonly asked questions.

What is a green funeral?

A green funeral is an environmentally friendly alternative to a traditional funeral.

Where does a green funeral take place?

A green funeral is most commonly held in a woodland or natural burial site.

What is a natural memorial?

Woodland and natural burial site do not allow for normal traditional headstones. Various Natural burial sites provide different options to allow for this. While some places may plant a tree on the grave others can provide other options for the grave. Placed around this post are pictures of some options offered by the lovely people at Green Acres Hatherley Wood.

What Coffin options are available?

For woodland and natural burial sites most won’t allow traditional coffins as they will want environmentally friendly variants. There is a wide range of materials that can be used to make these coffins such as Willow, Cardboard, and Bamboo just to name a few.

Are Green cremations possible?

The short answer is yes. We can provide an eco-friendly coffin, have the service held at a natural burial ground or nice woodland area, use an electric hearse, followed by a cremation at a local crematorium.

What clothing is allowed for a green funeral?

This can vary based on which natural burial ground you use for the funeral. If unsure please contact your local funeral director.

Can embalming take place on green funerals?

This depends on where the funeral is taking place. For any green cremations embalming can be carried out. But is left up to the family to decide if that’s what they would like. For green burials, this depends on which natural burial ground is chosen as most won’t allow for any embalming to have taken place but some don’t mind it. For any more information on this please check with your local funeral director.
